- Relationships Film – Written and Directed by Michael Domeyko Rowland Bulletin One Relationships: We are in relationship with other people, with our bodies, with our material life of homes, money, cars and so on, and, of course, ourselves. This is why mastery of relationship is essential. Interestingly enough, relationships are similar to films, in that in order for them to be successful, each person has to be able to activate, in their partner, the best emotions, as well as the best responses and reactions possible. This is often a surprise to hear, as many presume that their relationships will ‘sort of’ work out. They hope for the best. But it is rather like presuming that if you sit at a piano and tap the keys, without any training or knowledge of music whatsoever, you will eventually become Beethoven. A delusion par excellence. The first and most important reality to realise is that you are a body, mind and feeling instrument. This is what it means to be a human being. This human instrument is what you live in, and as, and through. It is what you refer to as ‘me’. And the way you play your human instrument, which means the way you express your behaviours and energies, completely dictates the quality of all your relationships. As well as every other part of your life. You have, within you right now, the potential to create excellent relationships with any person you wish. In order to do this, you need to completely understand, and be able to direct, your human instrument. Your human instrument is loaded with multiple programs, which have been downloaded into your mind and personality during your upbringing. Whether you are aware of it or not, all you will ever do, throughout your entire life, is to play out the programs which have been loaded into your human instrument. This is called conditioning and everyone goes through it. What else can you do? There is nothing else for you to express, except what is already inside you, unless you carefully learn how to absorb, and use, new ways of self expression. So, to improve your relating ability, you will need to repair the old and introduce something new. The second reality to become aware of, is that you are constantly projecting your own conscious and subconscious material onto other people, and your material life. You then expect them to respond back to you in the way you want. And, when this doesn’t happen, when a different response occurs in someone, you become confused and, more often than not, negative emotion arises within you, or you blame them in some way. Just like a film is projected onto the screen in a cinema, we project our own conditioned mind onto our relationships. There are no other choices, unless you are consciously developing yourself. Once you do begin true self development work, it is truly shocking to realise just how everything you express, how you react, and the decisions and judgements you make, are all a result of your own buried material. Some of this material is so deeply ingrained within you, and so difficult to become conscious of, that it is almost impossible to recognise that you are the source of the experiences you find yourself in. We all have so little consciousness, it is surprising any of us survive. We are able to function only because of these automatic patterns. They keep us going. We have no option but to be who we were conditioned to be, and to relate in the ways we were conditioned to relate. And yet, with the right information and skills, it is completely possible to come to more consciousness, particularly by using all of our relationships as the means to do so. To completely master what you express, which means not only your behaviours, but also your energies, is crucial to success and harmony. So in all your relationships, from now on, start to become very conscious of what the effect is of your behaviour, and your energy state, on other people. Films: Cinema Films, like all entertainment, are a service business. A restaurant is a service business. When you go to a restaurant, and you order chicken curry, you expect to get it. You don’t mind what the shape of the plate is, and what size the chicken is cut into, or if there are some vegetables with it. As long as you get a chicken curry. If an egg salad is given to you instead, you are shocked or disappointed. It was not what you ordered. It is very much the same with films. With cinema films the service you are offering is an emotional activation service. Filmmakers need to be emotional activation experts. They must know the ways of causing emotions to arise in their audience. A person, whether they are aware of it or not, goes to the cinema to have an emotional experience. The story, script, stars, sets, locations and music, may attract them to the film, but it is the emotional activation within themselves that they really want. A thriller offers to activate thrills in the viewer, a comedy to activate laughs, and a horror film offers terror. The emotions can be of any type: fear, excitement, intrigue, inspiration, happiness, revulsion, anger, awe and so on. Everything else is secondary to this consideration. Unless the audience receives the emotional experience they expect, they will be disappointed. They have been given an egg salad while expecting chicken. The film, of course, becomes a flop, because the word of mouth is poisonous. So, your first thought on deciding to make a film is this: ‘Which emotions do I want to activate in the audience?’ Consider this very, very carefully. It is the foundation, the first step upon which a filmmaker builds their film. Absolutely everything follows from this decision – from the script, right through to the poster advertising the film, and everything in between. Next time you watch a film, see if you can be aware of the emotional experience it promises you. And, after watching it, consider whether it has been able to deliver it to you. So, the art and science of motion picture production is: how do I create within the film, the correct images and sounds, which will deliver the emotions I have chosen to activate for the audience. With film, it all comes back to the story you are telling and the other specific ingredients you need to put into the mix, to ensure that you can deliver what is required. This is a vast subject and one which we will fully examine as we proceed through these bulletins and the web blog. We will also reveal the greatest secret of creativity known to humanity, and how you can apply it not only to film, but also to any type of creative expression. To the first step: In order to activate emotions you must draw the viewer into your story to the degree that they lose consciousness of their surroundings. Why? Because they must be able to access their subconscious minds. Why? Because this is where all emotions come from. And, as we have pointed out, no emotions equals no satisfaction. If you become conscious during a film, and look around at the other people in the cinema, and examine the ceiling architecture and so on, then obviously the film has lost you. You were not drawn into your subconscious. You are bored. The film was not constructed properly. It is rather like a massage. The masseur knows which way to press the muscles in order for you to feel the relaxation and letting go. The filmmaker knows which emotions to press, in order for you to enjoy the film. This reality also has applications in just about every other area of your life.
